How (and Why) We Started Our Backyard Rink Company

Why start a backyard rink company in Minnesota?

For us, it started with memories.

Like a lot of Minnesota kids, I grew up playing hockey on a homemade rink in the backyard. My dad built it the old-school way — no liner, just patience, cold weather, and layer after layer of water. It wasn’t perfect, but it was ours. That little patch of ice became the center of our winters.

Fast forward a couple decades, and I found myself wanting to build that same experience for my own kids. What started as a simple idea turned into something much bigger: Polar Bear Rinks.

How did Polar Bear Rinks get started?

Officially, the company started when we filed paperwork in 2025. But the real beginning was the moment we realized we could help other families bring that same backyard magic to life.

After researching the best rink supplies, testing setups in our own yard, and learning the ins and outs of proper ice maintenance, we decided to offer rink rentals, full-service installations, and DIY rink kits to our Minnesota neighbors.

It’s still a family effort — just like the rink I grew up on.

What does Polar Bear Rinks offer?

We specialize in:

  • Backyard ice rink installations

  • Seasonal rink rentals

  • DIY rink kits with support

  • Optional add-ons like temporary LED lighting, nets, and resurfacing tools

Whether you want a hands-on project or want us to handle everything, we’ll help you create the perfect winter setup for your family.

What’s next for Polar Bear Rinks?

This season, we’re offering free consultations all summer to help families plan ahead. We're also building out content to support first-time rink builders — whether they work with us or not.

The goal? Help more kids fall in love with skating right outside their back door.
